The Backcountry Capra redefines the lightweight mountain rifle and raises Weatherby’s standard for backcountry performance. Starting at just 4 pounds, the Capra uses the Mark V 6-lug short action machined from titanium, making it one of the lightest production rifles ever offered. Its thin-contour barrel features double-spiral fluting that forms a double helix. This cuts weight while adding rigidity to deliver sub-MOA accuracy. A modified Peak 44 Blacktooth stock shaves ounces on the trail while preserving comfortable ergonomics and effective recoil control.

When designing the Backcountry Capra, the engineering team went back to the drawing board to see how light a rifle we could build without sacrificing shootability, accuracy, or performance.

At the heart of the rifle are 6-lug short and 6-lug standard actions fabricated from titanium. Titanium offers an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and is naturally corrosion-resistant, making it ideal for hunts in unforgiving conditions. Historically, the 6-lug short action was only offered in the classic Varmintmaster Deluxe, but when we relaunched the action in 2025 we made it compatible with the .308 case family, unlocking its potential for a true lightweight mountain rifle.

We experimented with many barrel fluting options over the years, and the Capra takes that work to the next level with double spiral fluting that forms a double helix. This removes the most material possible from a thin contour barrel while increasing surface area for faster cooling and stronger rigidity that helps us deliver on our sub-MOA guarantee. Each chambering is available with shorter barrel options. Rest assured, we performed rigorous testing to optimize every barrel length so ballistic performance remains outstanding.

To save additional ounces, we partnered with Peak 44 to refine the already ultralight Blacktooth stock, creating the Bridger. We removed the hinge floorplate and modified the stock to create our first commercially available blind magazine (ADL) Mark V. That change significantly reduced weight and gave the rifle a clean, minimalist look. You will also find weight-saving cutouts throughout the stock and a shorter forend.

Managing recoil in an ultralight rifle is one of the hardest engineering challenges. The 3D hex recoil pad uses a honeycomb structure that crushes felt recoil, making the Capra easy to shoot and easy on the shoulder. Comfortable stock ergonomics and a crisp-breaking TriggerTech trigger help shooters maintain proper form, so light weight does not mean difficult shooting. The barrel is also threaded 1-2×28 so a suppressor or included Accubrake ST can be used.

Each Capra is hand-painted, and the metal work is finished in durable Cerakote for long-term protection in the field.
